The havoc the United States criminal justice system has wreaked on Black families is no secret.   Harrowing statistics such as Blacks making up 34% of the U.S. prison population, show the apparent racial disparities that exist in the world's largest incarcerator of humans.

The effect these criminal convictions have can be disastrous.   People with criminal background, issues face barriers in accessing federal student aid, career-related employment, government assistance with housing and the right to vote. The result is Black families living in poverty-ridden areas with substandard educational systems for their children. Removing criminal convictions from the record can be life-altering for many.
