Michigan Clean Slate Laws To Take Effect April 11

Project Clean Slate - Michigan Expungement Initiative

Project Clean Slate, a criminal record expungement initiative sponsored by the City of Detroit, will provide Michigan residents with all the services necessary to expunge applicable criminal charges from their record.

Expungement is the process of clearing a persons criminal record. People with dated convictions on their record face barriers in obtaining career-related employment, finding suitable housing and exercising their right to vote.

Expanded expungement laws in the state of Michigan are set to go into effect on April 11th. The Clean Slate initiative will give people experiencing criminal background issues a chance at a Clean Slate.

Effective April 11, 2021, expanded Michigan Clean Slate laws will:

  • Shorten the waiting period to apply for expungement to 5 years.
  • Allow multiple offenses that occurred on the same day or within a 24 hour period to be treated as 1 transaction when applying for expungement.
  • Provide expungement for most traffic offenses that are not DUI related or result in death.
  • Allow you to set aside marijuana convictions that would not be considered criminal offenses now that marijuana has been legalized in the state.
  • Extend expungement process to juveniles.

Certain offenses that previously did not qualify for expungement may now be eligible for expungement. You are no longer limited to 1 expungement over a lifetime. The expanded laws mean you may be eligible for expungement, even if you were not eligible before.

To take advantage of the Michigan Clean Slate initiative visit the Project Clean Slate online tool. Complete the registration process and an attorney will contact you within 14 days to discuss your eligibility.
